Welcome from the Chair

Welcome from the Chair Aamir Khalid,

AamirMy sincere thanks for your interest in the work of the Business Board.

As Chair, I am delighted to welcome you to our work as the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for our esteemed region.

The Business Board comprises a fantastic team of industry executives and key opinion leaders not only within our region but also with national and international networks, interests and focus. We have representatives from key sectors of our economy including life sciences and healthcare, agri-tech and agri-food and advanced manufacturing. We also have strong academic expertise. I am personally thrilled to be supporting and representing the needs and interests of the vital small and medium enterprise (SME) community, many of whom I work with on a daily basis.

We take our responsibility for advising the Combined Authority Board most seriously and ensure that the voice of business is at the heart of the organisation.

The Mayor and the Combined Authority Board have agreed a pipeline of major investments and delivery programmes.  This includes a new Metro for Cambridge; a new University of Peterborough; the Cambridge to Oxford (road/rail/connectivity) growth corridor; major housing schemes that will deliver over 100,000 new homes; a new energy hub; and a focus on growing our key industrial sectors and international trade. In the near future it is confident that it will secure a strategic finance partner who will invest significantly into infrastructure programmes so that they can be realised quickly.

The role and influence of the Business Board is therefore critical. We have the passion and the ability to significantly influence the direction of travel.

Many of you will be aware of HM Government’s national Industrial Strategy. Regions need to create Local Industrial Strategies (LIS’s) and the Business Board owns the LIS for our region. This is currently being developed. I do hope you have had the opportunity to read the recently published Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Independent Economic Review (www.cpier.org.uk).

This is the most robust analysis of our region’s economy ever, with a Commission led by Dame Kate Barker responsible for its delivery. It provides an incredible evidence base for the development of our LIS and I am hugely excited by this unique opportunity.

Thank you for your interest in the Business Board. I do hope that the following pages give you clear insight into the support and opportunities available to you as we seek to collectively grow our economy and make the region the best place in the world to live, learn and work.
