Mayor’s £1 Bus Pass Celebrates 1 Million Journeys with Special Event at Hamerton Zoo
Over 1 million journeys have now been taken using the Mayor’s £1 Tiger Bus Pass, marking a major milestone for the scheme that has transformed travel for young people across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. To celebrate this achievement, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) is partnering with Hamerton Zoo Park for a special event on Saturday 22 March between 10am and 4pm, to showcase the impact of affordable and accessible travel in the region.
Celebrating with the Tigers at Hamerton Zoo
On the day of the event, Tiger Bus Pass holders will enjoy reduced entry costs at Hamerton Zoo Park, alongside special activities throughout the day. Mayor Dr. Nik Johnson will attend the celebration to mark the occasion and highlight the importance of accessible, affordable transport for young people.
Hamerton Zoo Park, known for its dedication to the conservation of rare, endangered, and unusual animals, is home to two tigers – Sahaja, a Malayan Tiger, and Mohan, a White Tiger. The park also features a Tiger on Demand virtual bus stop, making it easier for visitors to travel sustainably via public transport.
A Transformative Scheme for Young People
Launched in May 2024, the Tiger Bus Pass offers £1 fares for under-25s, helping young people access jobs, education, training, and social opportunities at a fraction of the usual travel cost. The scheme has seen over 40,000 applications and surpassed 1 million journeys in less than a year, proving to be a lifeline for students, apprentices, and young workers across the region.
Mayor Dr. Nik Johnson said:
“The £1 Tiger Bus Pass is making a real difference to young people’s lives, and we see that in the number of people applying for and using the pass. We regularly hear from young people that this scheme has made it possible for them to access education, training, and work without the financial strain of high travel costs. Reaching 1 million journeys is an incredible achievement, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with the Tigers at Hamerton Zoo.”
Expanding the Reach of Tiger on Demand
In addition to the Tiger Bus Pass, the Combined Authority has also expanded its Tiger on Demand service, a flexible, demand-responsive transport option that helps residents in rural communities connect more easily to key destinations. Originally launched in West Huntingdonshire in November 2024, Tiger on Demand has since expanded to Fenland, East Cambridgeshire, and South Cambridgeshire in early 2025, making it easier for those without regular bus services to access education, work, and leisure.
