Free all-day travel for concessionary bus pass holders to go live
All-day free travel for concessionary bus pass holders in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will take effect from April 1 2025 thanks to Combined Authority funding.
At present, free travel for concessionary bus pass holders is only allowed during off-peak hours, beginning at 9.30am on weekdays.
From April 1, they will be able to use their passes for free travel at all hours, providing them with greater flexibility. Only those with a concessionary pass issued by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are eligible for this benefit. It is an additional benefit on top of the nationwide English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS), and all-day free travel will only apply when travelling within the Combined Authority (Cambridgeshire and Peterborough) area.
Removing the off-peak limit for concessionary pass use comes in response to feedback from local communities, including the difficulties many concessionary pass-holders face when dependent on public transport for peak-time travel.
The move reflects the Combined Authority’s commitment to invest in better buses for everyone in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Dr Nik Johnson, said: “Enabling concessionary bus pass holders to access free all-day travel is a fantastic step forward for enabling more affordable, convenient travel for older and disabled people who rely on public transport.”
