Mayor visits Cambridge company that’s charging economic growth
Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, visited Nyobolt, a pioneering Cambridge energy storage technology company with a bold vision for expansion and a shining example of the region’s innovation economy.
The Mayor visited the company’s headquarters near Impington, to see how it is helping to solve one of the biggest challenges in clean tech and energy: creating ultra-fast charging batteries that can store and deliver power more evenly and efficiently, avoiding peaks in demand and helping meet the round-the-clock energy needs of modern industries.
His visit comes shortly after the publication of the Combined Authority’s Local Growth Plan (LGP) – a roadmap to supporting some of our region’s most innovative sectors and companies to grow. It supports the Mayor’s ambition to make our local economy the UK’s fastest growing outside London.
Nyobolt is at the forefront of developing high-power, fast-charging energy solutions that deliver mission-critical uptime for power-demanding industries such as AI data centres, autonomous robotics, electric vehicles (EVs), grid infrastructure, and commercial vehicles. An example of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s cutting-edge economy, Nyobolt is pushing the boundaries of science and technology and strengthening Cambridge’s position as an innovation leader.
Combining innovation with sustainable growth, Nyobolt is a prime example of what makes our region’s innovation economy globally competitive. Nyobolt is one of several businesses identified in the LGP. The plan sets out six priority sectors for growth, including the energy and clean-tech sector in which Nyobolt is a leading innovator.
Cambridge already has extensive experience in this space, and with further investment it is well-placed to become an industry-leader. With world-class research institutions and innovation hubs, there is momentum to build on the city’s existing strengths and unlock new opportunities.
The LGP also recognises the need to address key infrastructure gaps like transport, housing, water and energy that threaten to hold it back from achieving its growth ambition.
Mayor Paul Bristow said: “Industry-disruptors like Nyobolt are critical to our region’s economy. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are no strangers to innovation, but I believe that with the right support and investment, and by working with businesses like Nyobolt, we can do much more.
“We have an ambitious vision for delivering growth – I want our economy to be the UK’s fastest growing outside the capital. It was exciting to see first-hand Nyobolt’s outside-the-box thinking, and it is this that will be key to accelerating growth. There has never been a better time to be an innovator here in Cambridge.”
Ramesh Narasimhan, Chief Commercial Officer at Nyobolt said: “We chose to establish Nyobolt’s global headquarters in Cambridge because of its world-class deep tech ecosystem, which fosters innovation, investment, talent and scale-up.
“Over the next 2-3 years, we’ll be looking at the next stage of our expansion, and we’d like to do so within the region. Meeting with the Mayor was a fantastic opportunity to highlight how Nyobolt can contribute to economic growth in the region.”
