Combined Authority board approves region’s Local Area Energy Plan

The Combined Authority Board has today (Wednesday 18th March) approved the Cambridgeshire Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP), setting out the energy infrastructure required to support long-term economic growth.

The LAEP identifies opportunities for clean, locally generated energy and provides clear assessment of the technical and financial requirements to meet the region’s clean energy ambitions and support local energy security. As a long-term evidence base, it will guide where new infrastructure is needed to keep pace with our growing economy, in line with the Local Growth Plan (LGP).

By establishing this foundation, the region is better positioned to attract the local and national investment needed to unlock energy capacity for businesses, communities and innovation. It will support communities who want to drive change in their areas and reduce fuel poverty in the face of increasing challenges.

The LAEP will be updated periodically to reflect changes in policy, growth ambitions, and market activity. This plan will identify where new infrastructure is needed to meet growing demands such as EV charging, supporting clean, sustainable growth.

The LAEP supports the Combined Authority’s Local Growth Plan and the 2025-29 Corporate Plan objectives. Without investment in energy, the region will face delays to essential infrastructure, higher energy connection costs and barriers to future growth.

Paul Bristow, said:

“The Local Area Energy Plan is about ensuring our businesses and communities have reliable and affordable energy so people can live well and businesses can grow. By aligning this work with our growth ambitions, we can create new jobs, attract investment, and make it easier for families and businesses to build their futures here.”
