Laying the Groundwork: How a Cambridgeshire Bootcamp is Transforming Young Lives
At the Urban&Civic Waterbeach development, targeted investment is doing more than just erecting new buildings, it’s building new futures for local young people.
Funded by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer programme is already celebrating its first major success stories. Delivered in partnership with Constructed Pathways, the initiative is actively transitioning young adults out of unemployment and into stable construction careers.
Bridging a Critical Skills Gap
The Youth Trailblazer funding is tackling skills shortages by offering local youth who are Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) a clear, fully supported route into employment. The construction industry has been identified as a major growth area for Cambridgeshire.
Learners like George best exemplify the life-changing impact of this funding. Previously working part-time and unsure of his next steps, George was introduced to the programme during an outreach visit. After completing a low-pressure, two-day taster session designed to build his confidence, George committed to the full six-week bricklaying bootcamp. He not only mastered the foundational skills but has already secured a full-time job with a local contractor.
“Now I’m actually doing this course… yes, it’s knackering, but at the end of the day, I’m getting a good qualification and a stable job that will set me for life,” George added. “I’d recommend it 110 per cent. They treat you amazingly.”
More Than Just Bricklaying
The Constructed Pathways model is uniquely designed to dismantle the barriers young people face when entering the workforce. Instructors report that the most profound changes in the learners aren’t technical, but behavioural.
The programme ensures long-term success through several key pillars:
- Behavioural Transformation: The curriculum emphasises discipline, conduct, and maturity. As industry leaders frequently note, the most important skill in construction is simply “turning up on time.”
- A Two-Step Pathway: The programme starts with a low-pressure taster session, followed by a rigorous six-week bootcamp reserved for those who truly find their passion.
- Comprehensive Support: Learners receive hands-on training, blended on-site work experience, full PPE, a CSCS card, and a guaranteed interview upon graduation.
The programme is already proving its immense value to the community. The current cohort at the Waterbeach facility consists of 11 learners, nine of whom were previously NEET, including five young people directly supported by the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer programme.
