£100k boost for school visits as Paul Bristow launches Mayor’s Day Out Initiative to open doors to cultural adventures for local students
Mayor Paul Bristow has officially launched (Wednesday 12th November) the Mayor’s Day Out initiative, which is a new fund designed to help schools cover the cost of travel and entry fees to cultural and natural attractions across the region. The project aims to give young people the chance to explore and connect with the rich heritage that surrounds them.
Backed by £100k from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the scheme will support a wide range of educational visits, with the goal of creating a vibrant prospectus of destinations that will bring learning to life beyond the classroom.
The first visit under the scheme took place at the Cromwell Museum, where Sixth Form Students from St Peter’s School and primary school students from Holywell School joined the Mayor for a guided tour and an immersive experience learning about the life and legacy of Oliver Cromwell.
Administered by Cambridgeshire County Council, the Mayor’s Day Out aims to fund at least 100 school visits across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Schools in the region will be contacted about the project this week and are warmly encouraged to apply and take advantage of this opportunity to enrich their students education through real world experiences. All visits need to take place by the end of March 2026.

Mayor Paul Bristow said:
“Growing up in the Fens, I developed a deep appreciation for the landscapes and stories that make our region unique. Today, as Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, I’m passionate about helping our young people discover that same sense of wonder.
“The Mayor’s Day Out is about opening doors, getting children out into the region, learning about the incredible history, culture and nature that surrounds us.”
