Cambridge Kinetics and Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority Lead the Way with Youth Apprenticeships

Cambridge Kinetics has become the first business in the region to successfully onboard an apprentice through the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority Youth Guarantee Age Grant, part of the Youth Trailblazer initiative, a pioneering programme exclusively for SMEs across the region, supporting local employers to take on young apprentices.

The Youth Guarantee Age Grant, delivered by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, supports employers in hiring apprentices aged 16–24 by offering financial incentives and guidance. It forms part of a broader mission to help residents secure better-paid, higher-skilled roles.

The company took on Alvis as an Apprentice Software Tester, providing hands-on experience and mentorship. In turn, he has become a valued member of the development team, bringing fresh energy and contributing to improving the quality of services offered to clients from the outset.

Jason, Founder of Cambridge Kinetics, said:
“Taking on an apprentice has been hugely valuable for my business, bringing in fresh ideas and energy while helping young people get their foot in the door. I’d encourage other employers to do the same — with support like the Combined Authority Age Grant, it’s easier to invest in young talent and see the benefits for your organisation.”

Alvis, Level 4 Software Testing Apprentice said:
“After college, I had two options: go straight to university or take an apprenticeship. University was an option, but it’s mostly theory and doesn’t provide the work experience you need. I chose an apprenticeship because I could gain hands-on experience, see if I like the industry, and earn a qualification at the same time. It just offered so many more benefits.”

Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough said:
“The Age Grant is more than a helping hand for employers to take on apprentices, it’s an investment in our region’s growth. It creates a real opportunity for our young people, giving them a chance to obtain the skills need to thrive and continue getting Cambridgeshire and Peterborough moving. The future is skills.”

The Age Grant forms part of the wider Youth Trailblazer Incentives, a suite of support designed to remove barriers for young people entering the workforce and help employers to bring fresh perspectives to shape the future of their industries.

Cambridge Kinetics’ story sets a powerful example for other employers across the region. Their investment into apprenticeships demonstrates how local businesses can play a vital role in shaping the future workforce and drive growth.
