Mayor asks Board to back plan to secure Tiger Pass for the future

Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, has asked the Combined Authority Board to back his plan to safeguard the Tiger Bus Pass.

The proposal, which goes before the Board on 18 December, would secure the future of the Tiger Pass in its current form until March 2027, when the government fare cap runs until, protecting the £1 fare for under-25s and keeping affordable, reliable travel in place for thousands of young people across the region.

Since its launch in May 2024, the Tiger Pass has seen significant uptake, with over 60,000 passes issued and more than 3.2 million journeys made. The pass enables anyone under 25 to travel across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough for just £1 per journey, providing access to education, work, training, and social opportunities while encouraging long-term public transport use.

Paul Bristow said: “When I became Mayor, I promised permanent reduced fares for young people as a fixture in our transport network. I know this is making a difference for young people across our region.

For many, it’s not just a ticket to school or work, but a way to see friends, take part in sport and leisure, and live life without worrying about the cost of travel.

I’m proud to have worked with Board members and officers to bring forward a proposal that secures the pass until March 2027, and I’m committed to working with them on options post March, to build a sustainable, long-term plan for the future.”

The Tiger Pass scheme was introduced to make bus travel more affordable for young people and has been credited with transforming travel habits, with nearly 90% of users saying they now use the bus more often because of the scheme. It remains an important part of the Combined Authority’s work to get Cambridgeshire and Peterborough moving, helping young people reach education, jobs and wider opportunities right across the region.
