Mayor Paul Bristow calls for urgent meeting with gas company CEO on Cambridge roadworks disruption
Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, has written an open letter to Cadent’s CEO to call for urgent action to reduce the potentially ‘chaotic’ impact of upcoming roadworks on Hills Road, Cambridge.
He is urging the gas company to meet with him and local partners concerned about the effect of the 11-month works on millions of journeys, particularly for NHS staff travelling to Addenbrooke’s and Royal Papworth hospitals.
In the letter to Cadent CEO Steve Fraser, Paul Bristow said: “Quite simply, if they can’t get to work on time, operations and other essential medical treatments will be at risk of cancellation and delay.”
The roadworks are scheduled to start on 23 June on a key arterial route in and out of the city. Local bus operators have also voiced concerns about impact on services.
He has called for a senior Cadent representative to join a local stakeholder meeting on June 17 to highlight the potential disruption and how this could be reduced.
He has also asked Mr Fraser to meet him personally and visit Cambridge to see the potential impact first-hand.
Paul Bristow added: “Upgrading infrastructure like gas is vital to the future of a growing city like Cambridge. But it must be done in a way that recognises the serious disruption for people today. I won’t sit on the sidelines while millions of journeys and critical services risk being thrown into chaos. I want to work with Cadent and our local partners to minimise the impact on our communities.”
