New bus depot for Peterborough gets Funding Committee backing
A proposed new bus depot in Peterborough has reached a fresh milestone after the Combined Authority’s Funding Committee approved a recommendation to fund the next stages of the project.
The new depot would enable better bus services, provide for new generations of electric buses and support a future franchised bus network.
There is a clear need for a new depot which can better support the growing needs of the city, including fleet expansion. The current depot is limited by its location, small size and lack of charging facilities.
Today’s (January 5) Funding Committee approved a recommendation to the Combined Authority Board to back the scheme’s outline business case, and advance work to buy the land for the depot and produce a full business case for its development. The Combined Authority Board will consider the recommendation at its meeting on January 28.
Any agreement to purchase land for the depot is planned to be put before the Board for approval in March 2026.
The funding recommended for approval to the Board is up to £7.6m of a total project cost of up to £20.6m
Paul Bristow said: “A new bus depot is much needed in Peterborough. The current depot is poorly located and holds back regeneration on Lincoln Road and the surrounding area.
“To make Peterborough a better place to live and work, we need to invest in better transport. This depot will be a big contributor and it’s important we put ourselves in a position to secure the right site quickly.
“It’s all part of my plan to revive our city centre and get Peterborough and the region moving.”
The Combined Authority has been working in partnership with Peterborough City Council to develop this project. It is also key to the delivery of transport improvements set out in the Local Growth Plan (LGP) that was published late last year.
In the LGP, Peterborough has been identified as one of four areas where there is enormous growth potential. However, to support growth of this scale, improvements to local transport are essential. This includes the delivery of the Peterborough Station Quarter, as well as road upgrades and better public transport that will be supported by the new depot.
