New bus depot for Peterborough secures Board approval

Peterborough’s new bus depot took another step forward after funding was approved by the Combined Authority Board in today’s meeting (28 January).

The Board has approved the outline business case for the new depot, which forms part of the Mayor’s plans to improve transport across the region. The approved funding will now enable a full business case to be created and to acquire land for the new depot. Any agreement to purchase land for the depot is planned to be put before the Board for approval in March 2026.

There is a clear need for a new bus depot to support the growing needs of the city. The new depot would enable better bus services, future fleet expansion including electric buses, and support a future franchised bus network. The current depot is limited by its location, small size and lack of charging facilities.

The Combined Authority has been working in partnership with Peterborough City Council to develop this project. It is also key to the delivery of transport improvements set out in the Local Growth Plan (LGP) which was published late last year.

Unlocking transport infrastructure is key for productivity and economic growth. Projects such as Peterborough Station Quarter, where works are beginning this spring, will play a significant role in improving journeys and the range of transport options available to residents.

The funding recommended by the Board is up to £7.6m of a forecast total project cost of £20.6m.

Paul Bristow said: “I am thrilled to have the backing of my Board for this project. A new bus depot is clearly needed and will help provide the better services and economic growth I’m determined to deliver for Peterborough.

“I’m now looking forward to cracking on and securing a site for it.”

Councillor Angus Ellis, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “I am delighted the Combined Authority have approved the first part of funding to build a bigger and better bus depot for the city to enable providers to expand their fleet and increase the use of electric vehicles. This is just one part of our wider vision, outlined in our corporate strategy, to support the transition to active and sustainable travel in Peterborough.

“A bigger and better Peterborough needs to give our residents a range of transport options, and this should lead to improved and more environmentally friendly bus services for those who live in, work in and visit the city.”
