Recycle Week Highlighted Regeneration and Reuse in St Neots
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority celebrated Recycle Week by showcasing ongoing regeneration in St Neots town centre, as part of their Market Towns Programme.
The project is part of the ongoing Combined Authority investment into market towns in the region. Undamaged paving blocks from Market Place Road have been carefully lifted, cleaned and re-laid on a new mortar bed, preserving their original look while strengthening the foundations for the future. The York stone from the market square’s footways is also being repurposed for use in the refurbished of the town’s bridge, reinforcing both sustainability and continuity with the town’s aesthetic.
The Monk sculptures, that were a prominent feature in the centre of the square, will be utilised in the new Rain Gardens on the north side of Market Square.
This year’s Recycle Week theme was ‘Recycle Me,’ and the careful work being undertaken as part of St Neots market place regeneration demonstrates how materials can be repurposed, breathing new life into the town while conserving its rich past and the identity of the town.
Reusing existing materials is a testament to the Combined Authority’s commitment to preserving the character of St Neots while future-proofing its infrastructure for future generations.
Dr Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough said: “By reusing the existing materials, as well as improving the town’s infrastructure, these welcome works also help preserve a strong sense of place and identity. I look forward to seeing the finished product!”
