Transport Committee greenlights 14 active travel schemes across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) has approved 14 active travel schemes through its Transport Committee, unlocking £4.9 million in government finding to deliver safer, more inclusive walking, wheeling and cycling routes across the region.
The milestone follows the July 2025 release of funding criteria by Active Travel England for the capital section of the Consolidated Fund. The Local Walking and Cycling Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPS) from Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council were used to identify priority projects before seeking approvals for both the Funding Committee and Transport Committee.
The 14 improved active travel schemes span both urban and rural communities, delivering targeted improvements that promote safer and more accessible mobility across the region, highlights include:
- Improvements to Alconbury Weald’s walking and cycling links to deliver phase two, which aims to enhance commuter and leisure access to Huntingdon.
- Match funding for Peterborough Station Quarter to introduce active travel infrastructure to support development of the station quarter to improve access to public transport.
- Six school crossings in Fenland, East Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire – targeting safer routes for children walking or cycling to school.
- Improvements to St Peter’s secondary school’s paths to upgrade pedestrian and cycle access to school, improving safety and encouraging active travel among students.
- Improved connectivity between residential areas and the city centre by undertaking upgrades on Bourges Boulevard for pedestrian and cycle paths.
- Removal of barriers on walking or cycling paths across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to ensure access to pushchairs, wheelchairs, bike trailers, cargo bikes and adapted bikes.
This initiative supports the national ambition for at least half of all urban journeys to be walked, wheeled, or cycled by 2030,giving residents more freedom in how they move, improving access to public transport.
Backed by £4.9 million in government funding, this project marks a significant step toward a more inclusive transport future. All schemes are scheduled for delivery by March 2026, with larger construction projects completed by March 2027.
Mayor Paul Bristow welcomed the schemes, stating:
“With this investment, we’re making it easier and safer to walk, wheel and cycle in our region. Better active travel options give people more confidence to choose healthy and affordable ways to get to work, school and leisure.
“By strengthening local connectivity and supporting new housing developments, active travel also plays an important role in driving economic growth across our region, which is our number one mission.”
