Cost of Living Statement
Dr Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
People and businesses across our region are understandably concerned about the impact of the huge rise the cost of living is having on them, from the food they buy to the fuel they need to warm their homes, drive to work or deliver their goods and services. I am hearing daily how individuals and communities are worried and struggling.
In a time of real uncertainty, I am proud of our work to stand up for local people and business throughout Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
Through the Great South Eastern Energy Hub we are directly working with the government roll out of retrofitting energy saving schemes direct into people’s homes to help them save on their energy bills and make homes more carbon neutral.
We have an excellent set of skills training packages delivered through our Adult Education Budget, our Boot Camps, Growth Works service for business and via our health and care academy. We seek to help people with their careers, increasing their earning potential and provide training to meet their needs and the needs of the local economy.
Working together with our constituent authorities across Peterborough, Cambridgeshire and Fenland the Combined Authority is starting to make a real difference to people’s lives – but we aren’t complacent and I understand that there is still much to do across affordable housing, affordable transport, skills training, robust business support and producing a sustainable healthy environment.
The cost of living crisis is very real and it is here – it is hurting and damaging all our communities.
I will continue to challenge myself and the Combined Authority to ensure we deliver meaningful support and ensure that real change happens.
