Homes England launched by Housing Secretary at Alconbury

A new national housing agency – Homes England – has today (11 January 2018) been launched by Housing Secretary Sajid Javid as one of the key steps towards delivering the homes the country needs.

Visiting Alconbury in Cambridgeshire, a former airfield which will bring 5,000 new homes, the Housing Secretary toured the 1,420 acre site which is just one of the many locations across the country receiving government funding to build more homes.

Housing Secretary Sajid Javid said:

“This government is determined to build the homes our country needs and help more people get on the housing ladder. Homes England will be at the heart of leading this effort.

The development at Alconbury is a prime example of how the agency has worked to deliver thousands of new homes, as well as improve roads and create space for local businesses.

The new agency will be key in replicating this approach right across the country and will help us build a Britain fit for the future.”

Mayor of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, James Palmer, said: “Cambridgeshire is one of the most dynamic parts of the country with a bold agenda for housing growth and therefore the ideal location for the Housing Secretary to launch Homes England.

“What is happening at Alconbury airfield is remarkable and the new community being developed there perfectly encapsulates what the Government is looking to achieve through its home building programme. A significant expansion of home building accompanied with significant investment in infrastructure to support the new communities.

“The 5,000 new homes on Alconbury airfield demonstrate what can be achieved when Government agencies such as Homes England and local authorities work together.

“The Secretary of State for Housing has bold ambitions when it comes to tackling the housing crisis and I’m determined that Cambridgeshire and Peterborough plays its role.”

Cllr Peter Topping, Portfolio Holder for New Homes and Communities at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, said: “We look forward to working closely with Homes England to deliver much-needed new homes in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. We have already outlined our intentions to use £170 million that was negotiated with Government as part of the devolution deal to bring forward more affordable housing. This will include affordable, rent and shared ownership schemes for the benefit of families across our area.”
