Paul Bristow statement on the £2 bus fare cap

Following the news today that Government is to lower the national bus fare cap to £2 from January, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Paul Bristow, has made the following statement: 

“This reinstatement of the £2 cap is welcome, helping people get to where they need to be, and that’s good for driving up passenger numbers, good for the local economy and good for our communities. It was wrong in the first place for Government to raise the national bus fare cap from £2 to £3 at the start of 2025, and I made that very clear at the time.”

“We’ve already gone further by funding our Tiger Pass, offering £1 fares for under-25s. This lower national cap will help us to secure the future of the Tiger Pass for young people across our region.”

“We now need certainty. The cap will change twice in as many years. Government should offer longer-term clarity on fares, so we can plan our own local support for our buses with confidence.”
