Free events to help employers find out more about hiring an apprentice

Many employers are interested in apprenticeships but don’t know where to start.

But those who want to find out more are already signing up for two free events in Cambridgeshire aimed at helping businesses discover the how and why of taking on an apprentice.

The in-person, Love2Learn Apprenticeships event at the Marriot Hotel in Huntingdon, 10am-2pm on September 22 is followed by a webinar on October 5, 10-11am.

The in-person event will help employers get advice and support and will break down the myths around the Apprenticeship Levy.

A panel of expert training providers will explain how apprenticeships can support business growth, including up-skilling existing employees and recruiting new talent to the workforce.

Run by Growth Works with Skills, the dedicated skill service established by the Combined Authority and Business Board, the event is ideal for those just looking to explore apprenticeships or who are ready to recruit. Topics covered include:

  • How to identify the correct type of apprenticeship levels and what they mean
  • How to find a suitable training provider
  • How to apply for Levy transfer (if you are a levy payer)
  • How to access the apprenticeship funding
  • Steps to recruitment through our digital talent recruitment platform
  • A case study from an employer who has benefitted from apprenticeships in their business

The webinar on October 5 will cover many of the same key topics, in a more condensed format. Experts from Growth Works with Skills will guide the webinar, which will also feature representatives from the new North Cambridgeshire Training Centre (NCTC) in Chatteris, run by West Suffolk College. The NCTC specialises in training apprentices.

The Combined Authority and Business Board is working across the region to increase the amount of apprenticeships, working with both employers, training providers and individuals to break down barriers and dispel myths about apprenticeships. 92% of companies say taking on apprentices has led to a more motivated and satisfied workforce, and 80% saw a significant rise in employee retention.

Al Kingsley, Chair of the Business Board, said: “Apprenticeships offer a world of opportunity for both businesses and individuals, giving a fantastic pathway to gain the skills needed in the 21st Century economy. We want to see more apprenticeships across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and to do that we must ensure knowledge is not a barrier. Events like these are a great way for employers to be reassured that taking on an apprentice is more straightforward than they think. I would encourage any local employer who has ever thought about taking on an apprentice to sign up to one of the events.”
