Aerial footage captures initial stages of railway station development work

A bird’s eye view of two exciting railway developments in the Fens has been captured on video thanks to new drone footage at March and Manea stations.

Aerial Cam has filmed the early stages of works being carried out as part of a multi-million pound regeneration of Fenland’s railway stations which is pushing forward with major improvements on the Hereward Line between Ely and Peterborough.

The Railway Station Masterplans programme is being delivered with £9.5million of funding from the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, led by Mayor Dr Nik Johnson, and driven by Fenland District Council on behalf of the Hereward Community Rail Partnership, with support from Greater Anglia.

Mayor Dr Johnson said, “People in the Fens need comfortable, reliable and eco-friendly public transport that gives the same access to jobs and leisure activities that others who are better served enjoy.  Regenerating railways stations for the Fenland community remains a top priority for the Combined Authority and I’m delighted that the results of very good partnership working can be seen on the ground – and from the air.”

The upgrade work at March Railway Station, which is due to finish by the end of this year, will see a new open-plan ticket hall and waiting area, accessible modern toilet facilities, retail outlets, and an extended car park and bike park at the station.

At Manea, a new station bike and car park is being built, with over 100 car parking spaces and a new cycle shelter, CCTV, and low energy lighting. The work is also due to be completed by the end of the year.

Cllr Chris Seaton, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport, said: “The aerial footage offers a unique perspective on these exciting upgrades and really showcases the pace at which they’re developing.

“The works are the latest in our ongoing Railway Station Masterplans programme, and I can’t wait to see them come to fruition. The programme is all about making our Hereward railway stations more welcoming for visitors and commuters and providing transport connections that are greener, safer and more comfortable than long journeys by car.”
